Start tidying up codebase #16

Just a few commits to cleanup the codebase, adding tests and improving layout.

@sickill I'm not sure how you want to manage pull-requests and I don't want to eat into your time. To reduce burden for you, I'll open pull-requests for changes I'd like to make and if you don't merge it after 'a while', I'll merge it myself. (I'll try not to break things! :grin:) If you'd prefer a different way of working please let me know.
