Marker comment ignored if immediately followed by anything other than newline #551

Open matthchr opened 3 years ago

matthchr commented 3 years ago

It is possible to place +kubebuilder marker comments in such a way that they do not work, but no error or other indication is given that they were ignored.

This is basically the same issue as #436 which was closed.

To reproduce: This is taken from the CronJob Kubebuilder sample:

Works

// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch.tutorial.kubebuilder.io,resources=cronjobs,verbs=get;list;watch;create;update;patch;delete
// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch.tutorial.kubebuilder.io,resources=cronjobs/status,verbs=get;update;patch
// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch,resources=jobs,verbs=get;list;watch;create;update;patch;delete
// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch,resources=jobs/status,verbs=get

var (
    scheduledTimeAnnotation = "batch.tutorial.kubebuilder.io/scheduled-at"
)

Doesn't work

// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch.tutorial.kubebuilder.io,resources=cronjobs,verbs=get;list;watch;create;update;patch;delete
// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch.tutorial.kubebuilder.io,resources=cronjobs/status,verbs=get;update;patch
// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch,resources=jobs,verbs=get;list;watch;create;update;patch;delete
// +kubebuilder:rbac:groups=batch,resources=jobs/status,verbs=get
var (
    scheduledTimeAnnotation = "batch.tutorial.kubebuilder.io/scheduled-at"
)

Somehow, the fact that there isn't a newline following the comments causes them to be missed when running controller-gen.

Covariance commented 3 years ago

I have also encountered this issue (#574), but since that one is a duplicate, I decided to closed it.

I have encountered the same kind of behaviour:

//+kubebuilder:rbac:groups="",resources=secrets,verbs=create;delete;list;get;watch;update
func (r *someReconciler) Reconcile(ctx context.Context, req ctrl.Request) (ctrl.Result, error) {
// Something something
}

When I ran controller-gen rbac:roleName=connector-manager paths="./..." output:stdout on this module, it didn't output any RBAC files at all. The issue is solved by adding a blank line between marker and function, like this:

//+kubebuilder:rbac:groups="",resources=secrets,verbs=create;delete;list;get;watch;update

func (r *someReconciler) Reconcile(ctx context.Context, req ctrl.Request) (ctrl.Result, error) {
// Something something
}

Without any other changes to the code except this new line, aforementioned command produces RBAC file for this marker.

If it is not a bug, then, as I think, this type of behaviour should be mentioned somewhere.

P.S.: It is important to note that other markers, such as +kubebuilder:validation, do not require a blank line before them.

Indeed a little bit strange :). Someone will have to look into why the empty line is required

In the meantime it sounds reasonable to document the limitation somewhere in the kubebuilder book (if not already done)
