Refresh architecture description and diagrams. #373

First commit, long way to go.

I'd like to work though this with other people before doing too much more. Hence, the early draft PR.

There is TODO: comments(s) in the markdown to help me work through this.

When complete, this will close #258.

Hi @jvanz . Getting this going again. I've created architecture-2.md. I've removed the diagrams. At the start of the text, I've added some points that should perhaps be included in the page. When we have a better grasp on the text components, we can look at diagramming again.

Can you take a look please?
