Sure, I restarted a new terminal and performed the source operation as instructed in the readme.

How did you install ros? If you install like
apt install ros-xxx-ros-base
Some packages may be missing... Please try
apt install ros-xxx-desktop

You might fail to compile. Let me see the log of catkin_make.
I needed to install libopencv-dev and qt5-default besides ros-xxx-desktop

Here is the catkin_make compilation log and the OpenCV version. Could you please have a look at them?
It looks fine. Isn't it still working?
When I open RViz after compiling with catkin_make, there is no rviz_hdmap_editor option when I choose to add new panels.
