CLAP? #473

any thoughts about supporting CLAP in Kushview Element? Both the ability to host CLAP plugins as well as to run Element itself as a CLAP plugin....

??

Never heard of CLAP before this. Looks like a pretty simple API: I don't see why it couldn't be done. I saw a JUCE binding in the same project on the plugin side as well.

Forgot to ask, to you, which is more important hosting or running as plugin?

steveschow commented 2 years ago

hosting CLAP will be more important as it ramps up because initially it looks like only BitWig and Reaper have committed to hosting CLAP, but obviously everyone is hoping other big DAW's will do so, maybe the Ableton guys will get onboard earlier. Steinberg, Avid and Apple will probably never do it.

Anyway, having a sub-hoster like Kushview able to host CLAP plugins would make them immediately accessible in all hosts.

The ability to run as a CLAP plugin itself may become more obvious in the future if and when CLAP hosting actually becomes more prevalent in the future.

Urs from U-He has really gotten behind this and some other prominent developers are pretty excited because compared to LV2, its much more simple and quite possibly has a chance to replace VST2 as the defacto standard plugin format that everyone develops for first...wrapping everything else around that..or something like that. No Steinberg license, etc.. there is a lot of buzz about this now, some big threads on KVR developing, its happening very fast.

and yea even a JUCE fork, for a Cmake build of JUCE that could produce easily at least I think a CLAP plugin version of a JUCE Plugin. Not sure how easily that project will add the ability to host CLAP plugins...but I am confident that a JUCE fork for this is going to happen soon.

iPlug Oli has also been speaking positively about it.

That's what I was thinking too, hosting more important. Definitely interested, might see if I can get the basics working this week sometime. API looks very simple.
