Enhancements requested by WPOD #7

Open MichaelSmith-NOAA opened 3 years ago

On May 2, 2021, WPOD requested the following enhancement for the ROF evaluation:

  1. How much more work is it to deliver gage hits/misses, POD, etc.? With the v2.1, you can use the open-loop member to test against 7,500 ish locations without worrying about nudging, correct?

Response by KVW May 3, 2021: Regarding your request #3, I have been planning to add maps of hit/misses at gage locations to the hourly updating (i.e., maps that I showed in presentations last month). The examples I demoed were comparing short range forecasts to obs data directly at gages within the 'region of interest'. When we talked through those, I mentioned the need to filter out locations that are affected by regulation (which I have yet to look into). Since the ROF now includes only reaches of order 5 and below, many of the regulated locations may be filtered out already. I'll look into whether that is the case. I need to get back to you with an estimate of timing for these maps, but hoping it won't be too hard.

The nudging is less of an issue for these since we are comparing the forecasts (rather than AnA) to obs. But using the open loop is a good thing to add to the list to explore as a future step - to answer questions about sources of error. Let's create the wish list and figure out priorities :-)

The 2nd part of this request will be considered for version 2.0 of the ROF eval.

@MichaelSmith-NOAA I will not likely get to this before my trip. Gage maps are at top of the list for when I get back.

@kvanwerkhoven thanks, and sorry for confusion. I didn't mean to imply it was 'due' before your vacation.

@MichaelSmith-NOAA No worries and no confusion, just letting you know where things stand :-)
