Current format is custom, which doesn't benefit the community much. We need something straightforward usable for dynamic animated meshes, something with good exporters and standardized.

Since I like having open tools available (read: blender) here's a bunch of formats it supports:

IQM provides a blender exporter for both the binary and text-based format in their SDK. Collada has native support in blender and decent support in commercial software as well AFAIK. glTF seems to be intent to replace this, though. Alembic is apparently getting native support in blender too. It seems to be more intended for interchanging scenes for static renders. (maybe mention your most important criteria in the OP)
