The sub challenges function pretty much the same as normal challenges (including the need to block them based on costuming tags), but the grouping limits the number of points you can get from them.
Possibly related, Gheist has a challenge called "Lost Life". Instead of letting you pick from a specific list of sub challenges, it lets you pick a repped challenge from any other breed (including from sub breeds) and grants the BP for it as though it were Gheist BP. Both the sub challenge system and this weird one-off use a system of "present some choices of otherwise unavailable challenges, compute BP award and costuming tags based on them", so they might ultimately use the same controller.
