Only a couple of main unit types with some basic rock-paper-scissors interactions. Each type can be trained/equipped to gain advantage over other types (or improve existing advantages or reduce disadvantages?). More advanced units are made obvious with generic stars above unit icon. Specialties are shown with mini icons below unit icon (when clicked or hovered?). Nonnative equips increase weight and slow down unit (but make them more versatile).
Costs ramps as a cumulative percentage of original unit value plus upgrades (or simply current value??). Native upgrades are cheaper than non native upgrades. E.g native upgrades are +5%/upgrade; non native upgrades are +10%/upgrade)
(Not sure about this part) by default you can’t see stars or specialities of an opponent’s unit until it attacks (stars?) or kills (specialties) one of yours. Then you can see the stars/specialties until that unit leaves your LOS then becomes hidden again. You can plant spies in your opponents unit to track it. You can research techs to reveal stars/specialties when they enter your territory? (Rand: research techs that increase probability of spontaneously identifying spies?)
