DPMS XP bug in 20140819 and later versions #203

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?

When installing XP from ISO using DPMS (virtual F6 floppy) to a SATA HDD, the
latest version causes XP Setup to error with a 'No hard disks found in this
system'. Not even the USB HDD is detected!

I have tried different versions of grldr

2014-07-11 OK
2014-08-13 OK
2014-08-17 OK
2014-08-19 BAD
2014-08-22 BAD
2014-09-12 BAD

I tested using Easy2Boot+DPMS and XP SP3 ISO file in \_ISO\WINDOWS\XP folder
under VBox with VM and SATA controller.

If VM is run using IDE controller then XP does detect both USB and Virtual disk.

Any luck finding the problem? I can test a new version quite quickly if you
want me to try something.

You can make an E2B USB drive from
http://www.easy2boot.com/make-an-easy2boot-usb-drive/
Use 30MB E2B+DPMS 1.55 download.
Run \_ISO\docs\Make_E2B_USB_Drive\Make_E2B_USB_Drive.cmd to make bootable USB
drive.
Then add \_ISO\WINDOWS\XP\XPPROSP3.ISO

To test XP Install on E2B
Boot in VM (e.g VBOX) on VM with SATA HDD (I use DavidB's VUMB utility)
http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/how-to-boot-from-usb-under-vmware-server
In E2B menu press W for Windows menu
The Install XP - Step 1
Follow defaults until XP Setup and get to choose drive screen.

And I found a bug in easy2boot

file XPStep1.g4b
set /a FSize=*0x8290>>20 > nul

if %FSize%>=%MEMSIZE% set NOFIT=1
getstr.g4b $$STRb030
call echo -e %STR%=%MEMSIZE%KB %ISO%=%FSize%KB Boot disk=%SG%GB

%ISO%=%FSize%KB should be `MB`

0.4.6a grub4dos-0.4.6a-2014-09-12.7z also has a problem.
When DPMS runs and it copies the driver files to the floppy disk, it hangs!

is grub4dos-0.4.6a-2014-09-18 fix it?

I don't know because it does not get as far as booting from the ISO.
DPMS hangs when writing to virtual FAT drive
