Obtain Cloud Image Training Data #959

I'm looking for cloud images taken by smartphone cameras. The images should be mostly of the sky (i.e. not of the ground) - they do not have to contain clouds. You do not need to label the images by the cloud types, I can do that (you can if you want though).

How I will use the images?

The images will be downloaded to my development computer, and I will run a program (locally) to extract features from the image (ex. cloud cover, contrast, luminance, etc). The features will be used as training data for a machine-learning algorithm. I will not upload your images online or put them in Trail Sense. The extracted features (anonymous / not convertible into the source image) may be uploaded to GitHub as a CSV file so I can run the machine learning algorithm on it in the future without needing to extract features again. The trained machine learning algorithm will be used in Trail Sense to detect cloud types.

If you think your image is better than the one already in Trail Sense (cloud tool) and you would like it to be featured in Trail Sense, you can say so in the email (and specify which image you would like to be put in Trail Sense). With that permission, I may use the image in Trail Sense as the cloud reference image if I choose to. Please let me know what attribute you would like, and I can put that into the dialog when you click the cloud image.

How to send images?

Please send me an email at trailsense@protonmail.com with the subject of "Cloud Images" and attach the images you want to send.

Are you limited to smartphone images or are images by more traditional digital cameras ok as well? (IOW would your algorithm like them as well.)

My preference would be for smartphone images - but I'll accept digital camera images as well (specify which ones are from a digital camera)

I should also specify the images should be taken from the ground (i.e. not from a plane) and be during the day.
