The main constraint when upgrading CRDs is relating to how stored versions are handled in the Cluster. To ensure that we are not upgrading CRDs and breaking existing cluster content, any CRD that was initially created with a specific storage version should upgrade in a way that it only ADDs new storage versions, instead of removing any preexisting. A simple way to check this is when upgrading CRDs.
AC:
OLM implements this through a custom check, see https://github.com/operator-framework/operator-lifecycle-manager/blob/master/pkg/lib/crd/storage.go
