Preserve the current item selection in the tasklist after a refresh.

Not so easy because there's not a clear way of identifying each item in the tasklist in a permanent way.

Maybe let "freeze" the tasklist with a dedicated menu checkbox: unchecking it would force-refresh the list and restart the automatic refreshing.
