- Use sans serif, easy to read fonts. HHS's recommended fonts are Times New Roman, Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, or Calibri.
- Color contrast ratio between text and background must be higher than 4.5:1 Resource: Paciello Group's Contrast Analyser
- PP's "Office Theme" is designed for accessible colors, contrast, and fonts Look to this as a guide for color contrast suggestions
- Do not use background images or watermarks
Suggestions for authors
- Give every slide a unique title
- Ensure that color is not the only means of conveying information. Use header sizes, underline, and other non-color-based cues to differentiate items
- Give your text breathing room Use bulleted lists or ordered lists to break up content in digestible pieces. Avoid using all capital letters and excessive italics or underlines. Include ample white space between sentences and paragraphs.
- Set reading order of slide elements. A screen reader reads the elements of a slide in the order they were added to the slide.
- Complex images, charts, and graphs have a caption or other descriptive text near them
- Links are descriptive Don't use “Click here" and make sure your links work properly
A word on speaker notes
Speaker notes which are not accessible to all Assistive Technology and is a violation of HHS Guidelines. If the slides are being uploaded or shared, the speaker notes either need to be removed or converted to PDF as "handouts."
Colors are discernible via a color blindness simulator.
