Completely uninstalled/reinstalled everything, this time after installing
winetricks i installed vcrun2003 and vcrun2005 with no problems(skipped d3dx9
for now), then (always from the terminal) installing vcrun 2008 i get (and then
the terminal crashes, I think):

That's a wine bug. Please file one if it's still in 1.6-rc2
note that you may want to try with/without the new Mac driver. The error you're
getting is a deadlock for updating a window.
