I'm not sure if that was the original idea as there is multiple ways to use the mouse to move a character, so here is one:
While maintaining the mouse click button, the player will be steered into the direction of the pointer, relative to the controlled character. Releasing the mouse button stops the movement. It can also be used along with the keyboard controls, to allow even more use-cases.
Unfortunately my screencast don't record the pointer, but you can still feel the movement on this video:
