사이코패스는 태어날 때부터 감정과 공감능력을 담당하는 전두엽과 측두엽이 발달되지 않았고, 소시오패스는 사이코패스만큼은 아니지만 타고난 유전적 성향에 어린 시절의 불우한 환경 등이 결합돼서 만들어지는 것으로 본다.
공감능력이 낮은 것은 사이코패스나 소시오패스의 무감정 증상에 동반해서 나타나는 증상으로, 이들만이 보이는 것이 아니라 자기애성 성격장애를 비롯해 여타 다른 성격장애 등에서도 종종 보이는 증상이다. 따라서 공감능력이 낮은 사람을 무조건 사이코패스라고 하는 것은 틀린 말이다.
사이코패스는 선천적으로 감정의 수준이 매우 결여되어 있어서 평소에는 짜증 정도의 감정 밖에 느끼지 못한다. 반면 대부분의 소시오패스는 사이코패스보다 더 충동적이고, 느끼는 감정의 정도도 그보다 더 높은 편이다. 따라서 사이코패스와 달리 소시오패스는 다른 사람과 미약하게나마 애착관계를 형성할 수도 있다. 그래서 연인 관계에서 상대방을 무척이나 사랑하는 것처럼 보이지만[4] 실제로는 별다른 감정이 없으며,[5] 성욕 해소나 경제적인 이득 등을 위해서 이성을 사귀는 등 '감정적이라기보단 이해타산적이고 목적을 따지는 연애'를 하는 경향이 있다. 그렇기에 더 이상 이득이 없다고 판단되면 상대방을 아무렇지도 않게 차버리고, 소시오패스인 본인도 차였다고 해서 큰 문제를 느끼지 않는다. 물론 이것도 상대적인 거라서 편집성 성격장애나 자기애성 성격장애, 경계선 성격장애 등의 성향을 가진 사람은 헤어질 때 중대한 문제를 일으키기도 한다. 특히 과거의 학대를 연상시키는 상황에서는 통제할 수 없을 정도로 격렬한 분노나 불안을 느끼는데, 이를 '소시오패스적 동요'라고 지칭한다.
사회적응도가 낮은 소시오패스일수록 이런 성향이 두드러지며, 대수롭지 않은 일인데도 상대방을 충동적으로 죽여서 뉴스에 나오는 상당수의 사례가 이런 경우라고 할 수 있다. 그래서 흔히 통념과 정반대로 충동적 강력범죄자는 소시오패스에, 사기범은 사이코패스에 많다.
실제로도 많은 수의 소시오패스는 사회생활에도 큰 문제가 없으며, 거의 대부분은 그냥 일부 사적인 관계에서 트러블이 많은 조금 묘한 인간정도로 인생을 살다가 가는 사람들이 대다수다. 사이코패스나 소시오패스라 해도 법을 지키고 품행에 문제가 없다면(즉 사회성을 '학습'했다면) 엄밀하게 말해서 반사회성 성격장애에 해당되지 않는다.
대개 '일반인은 양심적-감성적 문제 때문에 에너지를 소비하다 보니 수행능력이 비교적 낮지만, 사이코패스와 소시오패스는 그런 걸 무시하고 가능한 한 모든 수단을 다 쓰려고 들기 때문에 수행능력이 높다'고 추론하는데 실제로 가능성이 있는 이야기다.
소시오패스들 중 일부는 자신들이 가지고 있는 무공감성을 십분 활용해 굉장히 카리스마 있는 활동력을 보여주거나, 또는 객관적인 고민 상담을 해주면서 인간관계를 장악해 나가는 경우도 있다.[16] 물론 사람을 도와주는 건 심심풀이나 시간 때우기 정도 밖에 지나지 않겠지만, 일단 자신에게 손해가 없는 선에서라면 타인과 어느 정도 어울리는 것이 불가능한 건 아니다.

very impulsive very irresponsible reckless basically like a child were you surprised when you got diagnosed? i don't know surprised is the right word i think relieved like i felt out of control i didn't understnad why i was doing what i was doing for long time knowing that there's actual reason behind why i was doing these things it was like free in a way. what made you think you're sociopath? waking up in a prison whas probably my first clue. do you mind me asking what led you go into prison? I committed several crimes. i was using drugs and selling to support my habit i also like many retail thieft.

how long ago did you commit these crimes? the last time i commiited crime was 2011

and you haven't committed any crime since then? i wouldn't say i haven't committed any crime i haven't committed major crime since then actually i don't even drive reckless any more like i used to i stopped stealing now i say it i don't know if i've been doing crimes i think i change my ways

what made you make decision to change your life? not wanting to go to prison it was one of the worst experence in my life

what do you think people most often misunderstand being a sociopath? personally i think that the stereotype is that they are incredabily violent and malicious just to be mean just for it's own sake at least for me, that's not how it present more often than not, people with anti social personal disorder, sociopath they are just irresponsible and impulsive people that can lead to you being a little bit aggresive and irretible but the myth that they're violent and out-of-control moster is blown way out of proportion

have you ever manipulated someone to benefit you yeah of course i feel like everyone manipulate other people to an extent we all trying to get something out of any given relationship ok

i haven't really thought of that way for me, it's more like mutual, respect and and wanting to do other people to make them fee better yeah i see what you mean i look at all my relationship as very transactional it's just kinda the way that i engage with the world

what are something that piss you off? when people can't admint they are wrong they made mistake that drivers me absolutely crazy i think that just because i used to do that same thing used to not ever admit that i was wrong

what does ampathy look like for you if you have ampathy at all? so i call it cognitive ampathy it's just me making sure that i put myself in someone else's shoes, like intentionally.

my first response in any given situation is never empathy it's usually some like logical like solution to problem when a lot of time that's not what people need. they need you to listen and be there for them.

have you ever felt guilt or remorse? is that something that you feel?

that's it like a complicated question so at that time i dnd't fee bad about what i did i didn't have a care in the world once i move on from it, like in my head, it's over to me. which isn't great when you cheated on your partner and then they don't forget about that but i would. i regret it now because i don't like that i put people through that night i don't like that i hurt them but that's now that wasn't then.

i want to ask what your childhood was like. part of the problem is like i don't store memory very well so i don't necessarily remember much out of it

is that a condition being associate with sociopath? from what i gather, memory is very tied to emotion very strongly the way that i experience with emotion is not quite as deep as other people so emotional tie to memory that make stick in you brain doesn't really happen to me that often

did you tell your diagnose to your parents? no actually i didn't. i actually memtion it to my parents one time when i told them, they didn't belive me that's not the greg i know and i guess it just speaks to how fooled i had them they wouldn't just believe that

have you ever been in love and you fee love? i think so. i do experience emotions and love, connection, closeness it's just maybe not to the depth and breath of some other people

what do you say your favorite person in your life right now? probably my son follow very shortly after my partner he was main reasons that i gotten better

your diagnoses hasn't your parenting in any way? wanting to be the best dad is huge motivating factror for me cause i don't want him to live the same i've live there's huge generic component to sociopathy and the other half is your environment so i have to do with everything i can with this environment to overcome his generics
