Sure, we can look to improve that.
This would also resolve the need to keep that gradient on top. My problem with the gradient is that it means people will be uploading pictures but not seeing them the way they want them to appear, and if that's at all avoidable then I think it should be avoided.
I uploaded a picture for my profile banner that happens to be all black on the left (not really, but it became all black after the site processed it). Now the stuff on the left of my banner, like my image, social buttons, and text, all look really jarring because there's no transition from the black. I think a border around the image and medium grey dropshadows on the text and buttons would be a good thing, to create some separation between the content and the background.
