Why is there a Search item in the list, as the Search button will lead to the 
same window? Are there Android devices without a Search button?

Yes, there are. Example: the new Samsung Galaxy S. Also, some people might not 
be aware they can click that button, so I think making this feature obvious 
like that is a good choice.
