If this is an affix, how can it be used in an argument in syntax?

The claim that one and only one of the coordinands is a complement strikes me as weird, though. Can you drop the complement?

My point is that A&C argue about syntactic bracketings but according to the general wisdom in HPSG is that affixes are done in the lexicon. So, if the clitic is treated as an affix, there is nothing to argue about.
