The link you shared, mentions "as" an adverb when used as "comparison" or to "emphasize". To me it sounds your example sentence is like a comparison "sacrifice" as a "statistical category". Correct me if I am wrong. @MikeUnwalla

The example sentence (I think) refers to the function of the sacrifice fly.
