This is a copy of https://github.com/larryaasen/upgrader/pull/248, i'll add the tests and upgrade the PR so it can be merged

@ahmet-fennel I think this PR is ready to merge. Thanks for your hard work solving this problem for everyone. Will put it into a release soon.
