I'm not sure if this behavior is actually wanted anymore since @mlhess closed the original issue after my comment.

Well, I was working on it. We can close this.

In any case, I plan to reuse these changes in a 'getmappings' API-crawler script and have the current countries + companies only for the HTML generation. The companies script also fetches the country data, among other things, but it does nothing with it. This is extra ~5000 API requests that we can avoid doing. I don't have stats, but this should be 1/3 less API calls.
