I'm in the Midwest USA, near Chicago. As of yesterday, 2023-06-05, the "hide shorts" function stopped working. I do understand that this may well be regional, and it may be a bit before it is fixed. There were certainly some changes done by YouTube, as the layout is also screwed up. (noting to do with this addon.) Up until yesterday, this worked flawlessly.

Reinstalling seems to have fixed the issue. If it reoccurs, I will let you know.

Bah... spoke too soon. Was gone all day, but came back with a vengeance...

lawrencehook commented 1 year ago

Thanks for making an issue! I think the same update has happened to me. I'll try to push a fix soon.

Aulig commented 1 year ago

Same for me too (Germany). Thanks a lot for your hard work Lawrence - this addon is such a blessing!

lawrencehook commented 1 year ago

Okay, it should be fixed as of the latest version (4.3.42), which is live on both Firefox and Chrome.

The videos don't line up together as nicely as they used to, but shorts, live videos, etc. successfully get hidden on the subscriptions page again.

MickCasanova commented 1 year ago

As much as I appreciate this, this new method is creating more of a problem than it is solving. It's almost easier to hide them manually and refresh to a full page than deal with all the blank spaces which can take up nearly the entire viewable area. Thanks for trying though...

Just want to say that there are many other features of your extension that are unique and useful. I've noticed that other extensions that block shorts are suffering from the same issue, so it's quite obvious that it's a YouTube thing. I still need this extension, and rely on many of it's features that aren't present in any other extension, so don't think your effort isn't appreciated. Just don't want you to give up on this. I want to thank you once again.

Thanks Mick! I appreciate it.

I have a partial solution to the blank space issue. There's some minor sizing irregularities, but still an improvement I think. I'll try to release it soon.

MickCasanova commented 1 year ago

That would be great... Then there's one thing you might also consider. Recently YouTube introduced a feature that shows the video when you hover over the thumbnail... The downside is that it adds the video to your view history whether you actually watched it or not. Unfortunately, there is no way to turn it off. Have tried several scripts, but no luck. They do have a way to turn it off, but it doesn't work. Figures...

This option already exists: "Disable play on hover" Screenshot from 2023-06-15 11-16-25

lawrencehook commented 1 year ago

There's also a native way to disable that setting too.

Okay, I released a new version (4.3.45) that reduces the empty space on the subscriptions page. It's not perfect, but should be an improvement.

MickCasanova commented 1 year ago

The hover over doesn't work btw. (Aside from me not actually seeing it was there, my bad)YouTube fucked that up too. If you hover over the video for a bit, then check history, it shows as being watched. Not your fault, but damned YouTube can't stop screwing with things.. Their option is not persistent. When you check it, it turns itself back on.

EDIT: Something you did it the current update seems to have also affected the hover over. That seems to work now. It didn't work on the 6-8 version. Everything seems to work now.. The blank space is FAR less annoying even though it slightly skews ht page. I can live with that. Thank you!

For what it's worth, there is an extension called "BlockTube" that I use to block channels... Their implementation of "shorts block" seems to block shorts without any skewing of the subscription page. In other words, there are no spaces at all. Unfortunately. it's an all or nothing proposition, but it does get rid of the blank space completely. Just an FYI...

lawrencehook commented 1 year ago

Interesting, I'll see if I can figure how they do it. Thanks for the pointer!
