Look through transition models and try to understand the 'flow' of causality for the variables. i.e. smoking predicts cancer, cancer predicts labour force participation and functional limitations. Then need to remove any cyclical predictions, and need to be careful about what exactly will be affected when planning interventions, so should focus on intervention variables at least.
