No FDS BIOS or Game Genie (3.0.9) #185

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Load up any FDS file.
2. Error message pops up: FDS BIOS file not found!
3. And when starting any game (even an FDS one), there's no Game Genie
screen.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
My FDS games should start up with the typical Famicom Disk System screen,
but no dice in this newest version. Also, when starting any game, there's
no Game Genie screen (assuming one still pops up every time rather than
having a choice via a setting like in Issue 164).

Does this issue occur on FCE Ultra for Windows?
Nope.

What version are you using? On GameCube or Wii?
Wii (3.0.9)

Are you using the official build (from the downloads page or auto-update)?
Yes.

Please provide any additional information below.
I have disksys.rom and gg.rom in the same directory as they've always been
in. (sd:/fceugx/)

Having the same exact issue. Tried alerting you to it in the last version as
well,
but got passed off as though it wasnt an issue. This could've been corrected
by now
if it werent.

Works perfectly fine for me.

I'm telling you, I haven't moved ANY .rom files since 3.0.8 (when we had to
move
disksys.rom to 'sd:/fceugx' instead of wherever it used to be).

And it's not working now. I wouldn't make this stuff up.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Well, it's a mystery to me too, since there has been virtually no changes since
3.0.8.

I tried everything I could think of. Move the files to different directories
(including where the ROMs are), delete the settings.xml file... nothing. I can
play
FDS games AND use Game Genie in 3.0.8, but not 3.0.9. Something had to have
happened.

Until this mystery is solved, I'll just stick with 3.0.8.

Strangely, if you load an FDS game from the network (Load Device = Network), it
will
find the BIOS (as long as disksys.rom is located in smb://fceugx/). However,
3.0.9
will no longer find the BIOS on my SD card when Load Device = SD (3.0.8 found
it fine).

So far, 3.0.6 is the latest version I can play FDS games on (I get an ERR. 22
error
on the FDS loading screen for versions above that).

Issue 187 has been merged into this issue.

Original comment by dborth@gmail.com on 17 Sep 2009 at 1:25

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
The only version I can use is 3.0.7 at this point. 3.0.8 and 3.0.9 have the
same
issue for w/e reason. The only thing I find odd is that I tried a larger FDS
BIOS
image located at SD://fceugx/ and it registered as an invalid BIOS file. It
was
41KB in size and renamed to specification. Also while searching around it
seems
that there are two distinct BIOS files for the disk system. The one at 8KB was
labeled NES Disk System BIOS. The 41KB one is the Famicom Disk System BIOS.

I got no idea what the difference is between them aside from file size, but for
some
inexplicable reason this emulator can detect the larger one and tell you it's
invalid, while the smaller one just doesnt register at all.

I can confirm this error as well. I have the 8k disksys.rom in root\fceugx\roms
and
the emu isn't finding it. I tried putting it in root\fceugx but it didn't find
it
there either.

Same thing here. I've got the 8k file and am using an sdhc. I've tried moving
it
around to every directory, but still nothing works. I would love for this
problem to
be fixed in the next release if you've got the time. Thank you very much for
all your
work!

No change at all assuming the BIOS location is still set to the root of the
FCEUGX
folder root where the roms, saves and cheats folders reside?

Thanks for testing. Could you let me know what messages pop up when you try to
load
an FDS game on this one:

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Ok tried the only other two locations that could be feasibly used for the BIOS.

FCEUGX app folder, and the roms folder. Still got the same results. Emu error
is
as follows....NO FDS BIOS FOUND! Invalid FDS file! This happens upon trying
to
load any FDS game I have in the roms directory. First it tells me about the
BIOS
not found then game being invalid.

Ok new build tested. First it said Loading FDS BIOS FCEUGX/disksys.rom and I
clicked ok. Then it said the same thing as noted above: FDS BIOS Found!
Invalid
game file!

not found is different from invalid. what does this build say?

thanks for testing so quickly.

FDS BIOS Not Found i meant! Sorry!

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:01

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Well I'm loading a rom in conjunction. So there's no confusion. It first says
the
FDS BIOS not found error then tells me my game file is invalid.

Still place the rom in the root of FCEUGX folder where the roms and saves go
correct?

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:08

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Yes, it will just tell me what went wrong (hopefully). should be at
sd:/fceugx/disksys.rom

alongside sd:/fceugx/roms and sd:/fceugx/saves

Original comment by dborth@gmail.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:12

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Same result. Loading file FCEUGX://disksys.rom FDS BIOS Not Found!

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:14

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
are you certain it read "Loading file FCEUGX://disksys.rom" exactly?

Original comment by dborth@gmail.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:16

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Yeah. Then it says FDS BIOS NOT Found.

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:24

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Aside from the game message that pops up afterward that's what it says. It
said the
same in the prior test build though I didnt type it up exactly as such.

Can anyone else confirm this? I don't see how the path could be mangled from
sd:/fceugx/disksys.rom to FCEUGX://disksys.rom

I'll test again to make sure. I'm not good with remembering how many dashes
and
such. This time I'll write it down as I see it.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Ok. Written on paper this time as seen on screen. Loading file:
FCEUGX/disksys.rom

I guess with all the rapid testing I wasnt remembering exactly how it went.

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:33

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
It's still the same thing though. FDS BIOS Not Found! in the end. Sorry for
the
confusion.

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:35

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Perhaps you'd like me to send a copy of my BIOS via e-mail or something?
Obviously
something isnt the same with the BIOS files we the end users and you the coder
have. Something is different if it works perfectly for you, and not a handful
of
users. It's the only rational thing I can think of is if you had what I and
possibly others have at our disposal.

great! I didn't actually fix anything with these tests, they were just for

The error messages were alright. I'm just bad with remembering the order of
how
things like the back slashes and such went in them. Again sorry for that bit
of
confusion. Again I will write any error on paper as I see them to avoid memory
lapse.

Original comment by spider5...@yahoo.com on 3 Oct 2009 at 10:47

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
That got it! I think the pathway it was reading before wasnt accurate for some
reason. I just know that a backslash goes before a specified path. like
SD:/FCEUGX
SD: = root of the card, / = directory, and FCEUGX =directory name.

Thanks a lot for the work you do man. This cased is closed!

Btw while you're on...When will Dosbox be updated? And how often does that one
error on the issue page occurr? I think the one where a person mentions
mounting
the SD card as another drive to change directory in Dosbox then cant mount SD
card
root. I been wanting to try the emulator but I dont want to screw up my SD
card in
the process.

^^My main reason for asking is I'm itching to have Zdoom on wii. It can
utilize DOS
to run, and unlike WiiDoom has better custom maps and features.
