it'd be real convenient if the university would be able to request materials for the research instead of having to gather them myself (https://discord.com/channels/139070364159311872/240841248750043137/723359839891357836)

You should be able to start a research and the university requests the resources from couriers. It's weird this is like the only building that doesn't use them.
