There is an issue with 'CMIP6.CMIP.E3SM-Project.E3SM-2-0.historical.r11i1p1f1.Omon.mlotst.gr.v20230811|dpesgf03.nccs.nasa.gov'. I need to check that out before continuing.

Hmm interesting, this seems to be a transient problem, but I should still be able to handle those sort of things more gracefully upstream.

Implemented tests, and fixed the upstream client PR code. LGTM
