Kalite and Kolibri Will no longer run on the same Windows 10 computer #5571

Closed fhenson1 closed 6 years ago

fhenson1 commented 6 years ago

I have been able to install Kalite version 0.17.4 and Kolibri 0.7.1 on Lenovo ideapad 320 laptops. I have to install Kolibri 0.7.1 first and then Kalite v 0.17.4 second. Otherwise I get a python failure when installing Kalite first. Once installed they both work great and I can have the laptop serving students on Kalite and Kolibri at the same time.

I tried the same sequence installing Kolibri 0.9.1 and the programs will not work. I get a broken python failure report. I have tried several different combinations but still have not been able to make it work. Each time i have done a reinstall of Windows 10 so the computer is starting as it comes from the factory minus the added junk.

For some reason the two programs do not like the version of python.

Any help would be appreciated as i really like the new version of Kolibri.

Hi @fhenson1, Thanks for reporting this. I think the reason why the kolibri will not work if you install the KA Lite first it's because KA Lite used lower version of Python and the Kolibri used higher version. I will create a fix on this next week.

fhenson1 commented 6 years ago

Thanks for the quick response.

I actually have tried installing both ways with the new version Kolibri and can not get it to work.

I look forward to the fix.

@fhenson1 I'll move this issue at ka-lite-installers issues.

Richard,

Is there a solution?

Thanks

Richard,

I see that this problem has been fixed on GitHub. Does this mean that the Download version on the Learning Equality web site have been updated? If they have not been updated how do I get the update?

Thanks for your help.

@fhenson1 I already created a fix for this in here, but the fix is not merge yet. You can test the fix after the Pull request is tested, merge and release. I'll ping you here after the release.

Richard,

I setup one or two computers a week with Kalite and Kolibri. All of the computers are running Windows 10 and have been updated with the latest Microsoft updates.

I am using these computers to setup learning centers in India and Africa. The laptops I buy are mainly HP, Dells, Lenovo, and Asus. They are basic computers and I usually pay less than $200 for the computers. I have setup over 200. When Kolibri became available I started including it.

My basis procedure:

Once I get a new computer I run Windows Clean install. This removes all the programs that came on the computer.

I download Adobe and Chrome

I install Kalite

I install Kolibri

I then copy the data base for Kalite and Kolibri from a portable disk.

Add additional files and Microsoft office.

When the Kolibri version was up dated I ran into the problem I notified you about. The fix to Kolibri worked and I was able to setup several computers with no issues. Then all of a sudden I cannot setup Kalite.

The following is without downloading Kolibri:

In the last week I have run into a problem with Kalite. I can no longer get Kalite to download and run successfully. Sometime after downloading I will get a message Python has failed. When I start the server and watch the task bar, python will start and then disappear from the task bar. I have reset the computers several times and reinstalled Windows 10. I have attached Kalite Log file.

I went ahead and downloaded and installed Kolibri and was able to get Kolibri to run okay. I could get Kalite to run so I could open the browser but was not able to get to the login site. I have attached a screen shot when it loads the browser. The Kalite Log 17 June 2018 is from this case.

I don’t think anything has changed with the Kalite program as I get the same result on the new computers using the file I downloaded from learingequality a couple of weeks ago. My guess is a Windows 10 update is causing Kalite to fail. I saw this happen with a major stock trading platform. Are there other reports of problems with new installs of Kalite.

I would appreciate any help as my learning project work is stymied.

@fhenson1 we are currently doing a testing for the Kolibri 0.10.x release. once we release it, I'm sure it will solve this issue. I'll notify you after we release it.

@fhenson1 can you try to run the kalite.exe start at the command prompt. Just follow the screenshot bellow. screen shot 2018-06-18 at 3 50 13 pm

Richard

I was not able to get kalite.exe start to run. I tried many other ideas I found on the internet but nothing would work for me. (I still believe a Windows 10 upgrade is probably causing the problem.)

I was finally able to get Kalite and Kolibri by doing the following:

I would load Kalite

Load Kolibri

Python fails

Ignore the failure.

Copy both Kalite and Kolibri files from another computer that I was able to get to work a few weeks ago.

Somehow this works.

Method 2

Install Kalite

Install earlier version of Kolibri

Then upgrade Kolibri to the latest version.

The upgrade does no work but you can copy the content files from one of the computers that worked before this problem and it will work.

During the upgrade it removes Python 2.7.12(64-bit) but both Kolibri and Kalite will work.

What will be different about Kolibri 0.10.x?

Thanks for your help.

The programs are amazing and the kids at the learning centers in India and Kenya are getting higher scores on the national test. One of the big benefits is the teachers are using the programs to improve their education level.

Be encouraged because you’ll are making a difference.

What will be different about Kolibri 0.10.x?

@fhenson1 the main issue why KA Lite and Kolibri doesn't work together, it's because it has a conflict of Python2.7 version KA Lite use the lower version and the Kolibri used the higher version of Python2.7. At the Kolibri 0.10.x release we updated its bundled Python version into 3 so it will not conflict with the KA Lite Python2.7 version. If you wanna test the Kolibri 0.10.x beta release you can download it at the releases. But the installer we uploaded there is for testing purposes only and it's not signed.
