One behavior that we decided to standardize in the new Filters page is to hide dropdown menu filter options if selecting them would show 0 results.
It'd be nice to let the user know we intentionally removed them and be able to explain why in a subtle way.
Example:
Current behavior
Right now, we hide dropdown menu options, but without the explanation. We're also inconsistent - sometimes hiding options, sometimes disabling them, and sometimes doing neither.
(Optional) The Value Add
Hiding filter options prevents users from experiencing a minor setback of cycling through "0 results" pages until they see the results they're looking for.
We don't have specific user feedback to make this next claim, but it can also be potentially confusing to see filter options appear and disappear. Explaining why this happens can prevent potential confusions in a pretty low-cost way.
