Hi Ed, thanks so much for the offer of help! I'm amazed that you succeeded in getting the project running locally, I'm not sure anyone else has ever managed that!
Normally, getting permission from translators is the sticking point, so I would hold off doing lots of translation work before then - not many people will be bothered having the interface in Spanish if no Spanish texts are available.
I'm in the process of transferring learnscripture.net to be formally owned by another organisation, which might possibly open up the ability to get rights to the NIV, but I'm not sure when that will happen, if at all.
If there are Spanish versions without copyright issues, it's usually best to start with them. It looks like "Reina Valera Gomez" is available without restriction - https://ebible.org/find/details.php?id=sparvg and I've imported a copy into BibleTime (a SWORD project). That means I should be able to easily repurpose the import_SVRJ.py
script (in the texts
repo) to import this version too. If you wanted to have a go at that yourself, that would be amazing, but I'd need to give you access to the texts
repo which is private because it contains copyrighted materials. You would need to take care not to share that repo publicly or back it up to other devices.
There is usually a little bit of language specific code that needs to be added - see https://github.com/learnscripture/learnscripture.net/blob/master/docs/languages.rst . If you were able to add that yourself and send a PR, that would be brilliant, otherwise you might be able to point me in the right direction in terms of the information needed:
Ah, thank you for providing that context. From this page, it looks like there's two public domain translations:
And there are four "open license" translations:
I think BES and RVG would be great starting points. BES uses a modern, easier Spanish (like NIV), and RVG is closer to the "classic" Reina Valera 1960 (similar to KJV). I'm open to figuring out the texts
repo and keeping it private as you explained.
Hi Luke,
Thanks for maintaining this excellent resource! I was wondering if you're interested in adding UI translations and Bible versions in Spanish (Latinamerican). I can start with the FTL files since I have the project running locally (thanks to the excellent docs), and then move to CMS content. I'll need your help with the Bible texts, not sure what the process is to get access to those. I think Reina Valera (in the 1960, 1995, or 2015 revisions) and Nueva Versión Internacinal (NIV in Spanish) would be good starting points.
