problem with fields whose value is null

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. mysql 5.0
2. record width data set to null
3. null return as:
in ResultSet getRows
c.getName():Indirizzo getCastedValue(c, 
dateTimesAsStrings)ûûûûûûûûûûûûûûû

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expected :empty string | instead: ûûûûûûûûûûûûûûû

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
the last version. OS Vista
