This could help a lot to focus the loop discovery and make it faster.

Also, a loop might even flow in the opposite direction. In fact, if it's at equilibrium, it should probably gently sway back and forth with a slight (alternating) current. So the graph we're finding loops in is actually not even a directed graph.
