Oxygen 8 not working under Catalina 10.15.7 #17

Dear Leigh,

thank you very much for your efforts preventing our gear going to the junkyard!

I followed your procedure (with M-Audio DMG in Downloads) and controlled if everything of the installation is in place, looked up in the system-info and it's there:

Produkt-ID: 0x1014 Hersteller-ID: 0x0763 (M-Audio) Version: 0.01 Geschwindigkeit: Bis zu 12 MBit/s Standort-ID: 0x5d100000 / 1 Verfügbare Stromstärke (mA): 500 Erforderliche Stromstärke (mA): 100 Zusätzlicher Betriebsstrom (mA): 0

Unfortunately it doesn't show in the Audio-MIDI setup, nor does it produce sound in Logic X.

Any ideas would be welcome!

Hmm, it seems there might be a problem with an expectation of the command line tools to be installed in order to run xcrun:

This is a little strange, the scripts running within the postinstall script don't directly call xcrun, so that is done somewhere behind the scenes, possibly by Python. The end result is that there are no .ihx files generated.

First check /usr/local/etc/midisport_firmware/ for the presence of files named 1410.cypress.ihx and others such as 1010.cypress.ihx? If they don't exist there, then, as the error in the log suggests, the installation from the M-Audio DMG and conversion to intel hex files has failed during the postinstall script. Also check that the other firmware files from the Linux distribution installed ok? They will be named MidiSport1x1.ihx, MidiSport2x2.ihx etc.

the only ones present in .../midisport_firmware/ are MIDISPORT_devices.xml MidiSport1x1.ihx MidiSport2x2.ihx MidiSport4x4.ihx MidiSport8x8-2.10.ihx MidiSport8x8-2.21.ihx MidiSportKS.ihx MidiSportLoader.ihx

but no cypress ones!

What I missed to mention: I am on OpenCore to make my MacPro 4.1/5.1 run Catalina. Maybe there are some interferences?

To confirm the veracity of the error message, also check /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools does or doesn't exist? I assume it won't on your machine? The first task is to understand where in extractMAudioFirmware.sh it's failing. It would seem that MA_Firmware_Loader.rsrc.decoded is being created, but it might be an empty file, in which case, the Python code rsrc2ihex.py will run, but immediately exit without error. It could be that folders may not be named as expected by the script on non-English language installations (I notice some of the messages are in German).

Within Terminal.app, execute the following lines:

/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools exists! After executing the 3 command lines separately there is indeed a MA Firmware Loader.rsrc in the named folder. Is rebooting recommended after that as well? Thanks for the help desk!

No rebooting is required, it's just a means to see if we can discover why the Intel hex files aren't being created, by recreating the same commands on your machine. So I would check a couple of things:

  1. If /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/xcrun exists? This is the command that is being reported as not being found.
  2. After executing the last DeRez command, do you have a text file named MA_Firmware_Loader.rsrc.decoded?
  3. If so, you should be able to view the contents of that with the command cat MA_Firmware_Loader.rsrc.decoded? Don't paste the internals here, but you should see a hex dump including the line data 'vers' (1) { near the last output lines?

If indeed the DeRez is running, and producing a decent decoded file, then the problem would seem to lie in the rsrc2ihex.py script.

First off, thank you very much for providing us a way to keep our old gear! Very much appreciated.

I am having an issue similar to @naniscola .... however, I am using Mojave, not Catalina. I run the installation process as you described, and it seems to work at first glance ... but I only have the files that were previously listed above in my midisport_firmware folder; I have no cypress files at all.

To check all the boxes, I have the MIDISPORT.plugin file in the correct place, the MIDISPORTFirmwareDownloader in the correct place, in LaunchDaemons I have a com.leighsmith.midisportfirmwaredownloader.plist file, and all the firmware files, it seems but the cypress ones. I also have the MIDI_USB_OSC_3.5.3.dmg file in my Downloads folder.

As far as possible errors to help diagnose the issue, I am not sure how to get the console readouts that @naniscola has provided you ... I check my system.log in my Console app, but see no mention of this process there, so I'm probably looking in the wrong place for errors. As it seems this current ticket is as yet unresolved, are there other things you can suggest to help me troubleshoot this issue? Thank you!

Just a quick update: I managed to get the Oxygen v1 work on Monterey 12.5.1. The problem is that rsrc2ihex.py is a Python 2 script while Monterey has Python 3. I copied the files from https://github.com/leighsmith/midisport-macos/issues/17#issuecomment-786779370 and the rsrc2ihex.py script (from leighsmith-midisport-macos/Installer/scripts) to a machine with Python 2, extracted the firmware files (including all *.cypress.ihx files) and copied them to the Monterey machine in /usr/local/etc/midisport_firmware/.

First of all many thanks for your oustanding work. Use legacy hardware is always a little victory ^^ I installed your drivers on my iMac and old macbook, with oxygen 8 perfectly working. Now updated to ventura (but with OpenCore patch). Same problem described above, even using 1.3.1. No way to manually place cypress.ihx files?
