Add to cart fails with "YOUR CART IS EMPTY" on first use #277

An error is displayed on the first add-to-cart from a product page. Subsequent attempts work, after some condition is met (either cookies or caching).

Steps to reproduce

I found it easier to repro this in Chrome (and I happen to be on OS X current).

clear browser cache and clear cookies (I did this using the console, setting caching to off and manually deleting site cookies)
load home page
visit product page (stool, for example)
add to cart
error displayed and redirect to cart page (see screenshot)
