Use another editor then tinyMCE that won't automatically create html but instead something like bbCODE. Then when reading from the database the bbCODE is translated into the correct html and thus codeigniters security class won't remove needed html from backstories and other places.

This looks like a good candidate https://github.com/wbb/wysibb for said editor
