Use and display of COM1 as default serial port on Mac and Linux is confusing. #600

Arduino 1.0 feature: Selected board and port display the serial ports should
display the current OS serial port name

Currently, COM1 is displayed on Mac OS x instead of /dev/tty.usb*

COM1 is the default serial port on all platforms until you select one from the
menu. Do you ever see it after you've selected a serial port from the menu?
If not, then this is probably a duplicate of issue 223 (automatically detecting
the right serial port). Or we could make the default something like "None"
instead of "COM1"
