On-screen keyboard not accessible on HTC Dream (a.k.a. G1 ) #191

What steps will reproduce the problem?

When I enter the ssh session on HTC G1 there is no intuitive way to trigger
the on-screen keyboard.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I would like to press the menu button for three seconds and see the virtual
keyboard. Or see a menu with an option to show the virtual keyboard. This
unfortunately isn't available (at least not on my G1)

It is however possible to use a work-around, when I click on the 'force
size' option and a window pops up, I'm able to trigger the software
keyboard by clicking on one of the editable fields. The keyboard stays open
after closing the window.

What version of the product are you using (you can see this by using Menu
-> About in the Host List)?
ConnectBot 1.5.4 (r346 2009.06.30)

What type of system are you trying to connect to?
any

If you are able to connect, what is the output of "echo $TERM", "uname -a",
and any other relevant information on the host?
--

Please provide any additional information below.
Using HTC Dream/G1 with Android Cupcake (1.5) build CRC1.

Google has stated that they don't want the hold-Menu-key-to-open-VK shortcut in
devices with a hardware keyboard (I had already submitted a patch to make this
the
case before).

In the development version you can tap the screen and it displays a keyboard
icon you
can tap to display the VK.

Thank you for your comment. Although I don't understand why Google recommends
such
behaviour - I see no harm in such shortcut existing in hardware-qwerty devices
(I
might be wrong).
Will this functionality from the development version be transferred to the
official
releases? (I'd like to know so that I could decide whether to install the dev
version
or to wait for update).

It will, but I don't have a time frame right now.
