The current FTP method will not work behind a proxy.  I suggest either
adding proxy support to the current FTP method, or (better yet) change
remote storage to use some kind of HTTP method.  Maybe an XML web service?
 Depending on what is involved, I may be able to provide a server.

I would support an HTML method to get the synch file, it would just be more
accessible that way. Also some sort of interface for the option would be nice 
as well.
