GoDaddy advice leads to a dead end #1089

I think that having documentation specifically for GoDaddy is an excellent idea, but there's currently a minor issue.

It links to https://www.godaddy.com/help/install-a-lets-encrypt-certificate-on-your-linux-hosting-account-28023, which in turn links back to to Let's Encrypt website:

You can find a list of available options under the Browser section.

The "Browser" section no longer exists. Somebody following these signposts may feel that they are on a wild goose chase .

It would be great if Let's Encrypt could reach out to GoDaddy directly and have them make an update on their page. Perhaps recommending to run Certbot on their machine in manual mode, since it is now available on all three of Windows/Linux/macOS.

Thanks for the report. I would love to see the instructions updated but the request is probably best coming from a GoDaddy customer.

Personally, I would just inspect the http referrer and show a big “hello, godaddy user” with some pointed text.

LetsEncrypt is large enough to drive the conversation:

I'm in the process of updating my ACME client to specifically address GoDaddy shared hosting (of which I have many instances) and hope to make most everything on this page obsolete in the very near future.

For the same reason as the removal of the "browser" section (the impossibility to enable automatic renewals), I think we should simply remove the last paragraph:

If, after reviewing the above problems, you decided that you’d like to try maintaining a Let’s Encrypt certificate on GoDaddy shared hosting, GoDaddy provides instructions. Keep in mind, following these instructions is time-consuming, and you are expected to do it every 60 days (not every 90 days as described on the linked page).

I would still like to state for the record that I wrote the CertSage ACME client specifically to enable GoDaddy shared hosting users to easily acquire and install Let's Encrypt certificates with many such users having already done so with great success. I will be releasing CertSage 1.2.0 within the next couple of days that will streamline the process even further. Shortly thereafter I will be completing and releasing a cPanel installation module that will reduce the time of installing CertSage, acquiring a certificate, and installing a certificate from a few minutes to under a minute. Even if the renewal is "manual", it will take less than a minute to update the certificate.

In short, I plan to submit a PR in the near future to permanently replace that eyesore of a page with an actual solution.

Update: CertSage 1.2.0 released
