These are not the sources we need, I am afraid. We must check and find out if they provide for each language in the data the sources from which the words were taken. Did you have a look at the excel file with the data that we use? Is there maybe an additional sheet with sources?
I checked the excel file from SI1 again. They only provide data in it. There aren't any sources included in the document. I checked if they could be on additional sheets too. The excel document has 3 sheets, one with data and two of them empty.
Then we must leave them empty. But I'd inquire with Martine Robeets at some point on this!
Martine just answered me in an email, passing me the sources that are apparently in a PDF file of the supplement (I did not know they were in some PDF):

The problem with these sources is: the data themselves are not attached to any word form, so we don't have word form X taken from data source Y. As a result, my suggestion is to leave this note somewhere, where we paste all data, and then we just say that this data has Robbeets et al. (2021) as source. For the comparison, this means we may have to manually check individual languages later, but not now.
@DavidSnee, if you create a file called NOTES.md
, you can add information, like the one on the sources there. You use MarkDown-Syntax, thus:
## Sources of the Dataset
The sources are listed in the supplementary material, but individual word forms are not associated with individual sources. As a result, we cannot offer this detail of analysis in the data. We therefore assign all sources to the original paper by Robbeets et al. (2021) instead of trying to trace sources individually to the words in the data. The full list of sources, as kindly provided by Martine Robbeets, is listed in the following.
That's fantastic.
Sorry, I must have missed where they have those sources. I checked all 26 of the SIs. That's really great that we have them now though.
Perfect. I will create that file now. Thank you.
Supplementary information 1, 2, 3, 4, 18 and 26 have a focus on the linguistic data, therefore, I included the source information from these documents here. I think the main document with the source information relevant for the our dataset is Supplementary Information 2. The other information from the supplementary documents I included below is mainly related to the phylogenetic analysis of this information, which could also be useful, I thought. I did not include the other supplementary information as it focuses on the agropastoral vocabulary, the archaeological data or the genetic data, or there was no source information included in them.
Main Paper: In their main paper, the authors indicate that they combined dictionary search with fieldwork. They don’t specifically indicate which dictionaries they used though. It is specifically indicated in the paper how the basic vocabulary for Turkic and Tungusic is sourced. The Turkic and Tungusic basic vocabulary included is based on a revision of recently published datasets, according to the authors. These references in the Main Paper Savelyev, A. & Robbeets, M. Supplementary Information 1: Comparative dataset including 3193 cognate sets representing 254 basic vocabulary concepts for 98 Transeurasian languages. Supplementary information 1 does not contain any sources. There they have the data for the basic vocabulary.
Supplementary Information 2: Basic vocabulary etymologies across the Transeurasian languages, underlying semantically equivalent cognate sets scored as (1) in SI 1 Supplementary Information 2 outlines the methodology used in the study for determining cognate classes. The methodology was based on existing etymological research, comparing words across multiple languages to identify potential cognates. They also mention using the Leipzig-Jakarta 200 list and the Jena 200 list as frameworks for selecting basic vocabulary concepts. The Leipzig-Jakarta 200 list is reduced to 195 items due to the merger of a few meanings (e.g., ‘breast’ and ‘chest’). It is supplemented by the Jena 200 list, which is an updated version of the Swadesh 200 list, currently applied to a comparison of Indo-European languages in the CoBL (Cognacy in Basic Lexicon) project by Anderson and Heggarty. Given the large overlap between the two lists, the final list amounts to 254 concepts. At the bottom of this document, they list the sources mentioned within it as follows: References mentioned in Supplementary Information 2 Antonov, A.
