Agreed, but my problem is on the HTC Droid Eris, also using Android 2.1. From
what I've read, this is a problem with many, many HTC users.

If I'm not mistaken, this is because the htc messages icon doesn't update as it
should, and apparently can't be refreshed (look in the wiki under Hero..).

When I used Sense, I solved it by downloading a widget called "SMS Unread
Count", which works great.

max.reppen is correct, this is an issue with the sense UI messaging icon not
refreshing. no known solution unfortunately, i would recommend installing "sms
unread count" as max said.
