Message notifications not playing sound or vibrating while screen is off if multiple messages are received #243

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.turn screen off
2.receive a message (you WILL hear a notification and feel vibration for the
first one depending on your settings)
3.receive any number of subsequent messages and you will NOT hear or feel
anything
4.press sleep/wake button to turn screen on and all subsequent message
notifications come through all at once

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expecting: notifications to come through as messages are received instead of
being queued until the screen is turned on
instead: first message is received while screen is off, all others are queued
until screen is turned on

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
program version: 1.1.0
[DEVICE] SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
[ROM] [JS7] « Serendipity 6.3 » **3/26**
[KERNEL] Onix v2.0.3 28MAR[SIO][OC/UV 1.6ghz][VoodooSnd 7]
(copied from my xda sig ;p)

Please provide any additional information below.
this issue seems to be unrelated to Issue 203 because it happens regardless of
the messaging app being open - on that note after testing this quite a bit more
i believe my issue report on 203 may be somewhat invalid (or caused moreso by
this issue)

There was a similar issue that affected the Samsung Moment, perhaps this issue
also affects the SGH-I897?

Similar yes, but im not using 'turn screen on' so the dim screen is irrelevant,
this issue is related to receiving multiple messages while the screen is off
(not being told to turn on)

I will try the turn screen on option but thus far my reason for not using it is
that when the screen comes on you see the popup (privacy mode does work) but
beneath the popup is whatever screen the phone was last left on (if the
messaging app is open this defeats the purpose of privacy mode because you can
see the message under the popup)

A more desirable effect would be showing just the lock screen (no popup while
screen is locked, popup should show after unlocking)

Can you try switching the screen to turn on and make sure dim screen is off? If
that works then it could be some bug in notifications when the screen is not
set to turn on.

using 'turn screen on' messages do show up properly whether the screen is off
or not, however as described above the underlying screen is whatever was left
open on the phone

pressing any of the buttons on the popup or waiting a few seconds after the
message is received results in the lock screen being shown

on a side note i am using the pattern lock and privacy mode is on

also note the above test was conducted with dim screen off - i will also test
with dim screen on to see if it makes a difference for the captivate

when dim screen is enabled it does not seem to have any effect on the issue

so it seems like as long as the screen turns on it clears the message queue and
messages come through immidiately

i tested sending two messages in a row quickly they both came through while the
screen was on in one quick shot, i also tested sending a message and waiting
until the screen went dark and sending another, the messages showed up as
expected (good) and the screen turned on each time

again though whatever was left on the phone prior to locking is shown
underneath the popup - so if the messaging app is open it can be clearly seen
what is happening (or if any other app is left open and in focus that app will
be shown under the popup as if the phone were never locked) the good news is
that the lock screen does show after a few seconds when the popup arrives and
pressing any buttons on the popup immediately shows the lock screen, so nobody
could USE the phone, but they could still see sensitive information (defeating
the purpose of privacy mode)

for functionality sake i have set the screen timeout to the lowest value (10
seconds) and will use this to ensure i receive my messages when i should be

hopefully the popup can be made to show only when the lockscreen is not
engaged, or the notifications could be made to come through without the need
for the screen to turn on (because when left off it seems to queue the messages)

another side note, email (using gmail app) does not have this issue, so it's
not a massive issue with notifications on the captivate
for email my screen does not turn on and i receive notifications as they come
without queue issues

i hope my feedback is helpful, keep up the great work on your app!

thanks for testing. this seems to be a bug with the "screen on for popup"
option, i was able to verify the problem on my Nexus S w/Gingerbread as well.
will look into this more when i get a chance.

A fully revamped version of SMS Popup is now available in the Google Play
Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.everythingandroid.smspopup

I am closing out all old issues/bugs that relate to SMS Popup <=1.10 as so much
was changed in this version. Please create new issues if you see them in the
latest update.
