Digital Substation Automation Systems (DSAS) #89

Open benvantende opened 6 months ago

benvantende commented 6 months ago

Mission Statement

The DSAS initiative seeks to optimize digital substations through open-source technology and provides a collaboration platform for projects working on digital substations.

Description

The origin lies in a proposal by Shuli a few years ago. (https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lf-energy-launches-digital-substation-initiative-to-modernize-power-grid-infrastructure-301082425.html). A community manager for the OpenSCD and CoMPAS project I see there is a lot to be gained by brainstorming the digital substation topic. As far as I see, under LF Energy we will have four projects on that topic (OpenSCD, CoMPAS, Seapath, Fledge). In discussion I had with some of these projects I have come to realise that even if these projects are under the LF Energy umbrella they are still solitary. Although working on the same topic they not aware of project progress and possibilities and willingness to collaborate. A monthly or bi-monthly working group meeting would keep us all in touch and create possibilities to collaborate.

Is this a new project or an existing one?

The origin lies in a proposal by Shuli a few years ago.

Current lead(s)

https://github.com/benvantende came up with the idea and will gladly facilitate the meetings

Sponsoring organization(s), along with any other key contributing individuals and/or organizations

Key contributing organisations would be the ones, already operating under LF Energy in the substation space, as mentioned earlier.

Detail any existing community infrastructure, including:

The separate projects host the code. In the future we might consider communicating what the projects do from the substation perspective and could even have a separate website (under LF Energy) fot that

Are there any specific infrastructure needs or requests outside of what is provided normally by LF Energy ? If so please detail them.

no

Why would this be a good candidate for inclusion in LF Energy?

This initiative will improve collaboration and communication.

How would this benefit from inclusion in LF Energy?

This initiative will improve communication for LF Energy in the sense that the topic of digital substations is way more approachable (human readable) than the separate projects.

Provide a statement on alignment with the mission in the LF Energy charter.

We aim to collaborate and communicate about the work we do and make that understandable.

What specific need does this project address?

It addresses communication between substation projects

Describe how this project impacts the energy industry.

The working group will provide clearer communication and lower the barrier for participation

Describe how this project intersects with other LF Energy projects/working groups/special interest groups.

As described earlier, it aims to be a platform for collaboration and communication.

Who are the potential benefactors of this project?

In the first instance, the mentioned projects will benefit from communication and hopefully we can exchange developers within the teams.

What other organizations in the world should be interested in this project?

Organizations that work on substation automation.

Plan for growing in maturity if accepted within LF Energy

I can imagine that in the future the working group could become more authoritative where it concerns collaboration, but we would already be really happy if collaboration and communication takes off.

Expected deliverables

For now, deliverables are setting up the meetings and having concerned parties at the table.

Timeline for the working group

I expect that within the year we would have an established working group that goes further than meetings between the projects, but also organises events and webinars together.

Thanks @benvantende - putting on the schedule for March 12th; let me know if that's ok

benvantende commented 6 months ago

@jmertic I am a bit in doubt. That is almost 4 months. That is a bit too long. Or I can do some exploratory working group meetings and get some more solid ideas going. https://github.com/nicorikken already had some valuable feedback.

jmertic commented 6 months ago

I think doing exploratory meetings makes sense; would be good to bring to the TAC goals/non-goals and deliverables well outlined.

We can always try to move sooner if the schedule opens up, but right now we are 3+ months out.

I will be interested in discussing the role of FledgePOWER with this group. Please keep me in the loop.

benvantende commented 5 months ago

Thanks for the feedback. You can participate in organising this. It still needs to go to the TAC for approval. I also asked Eloi from Seapath if he would want to join in presenting this to the TAC. As it is another 3 months away, I would suggest to organise an online meetup or two already. Then the proof will be in the pudding, so to speak.

Approved via TAC vote on 4/2.
