Linguist support continued #104

fresh copy of #91 after cleaning up extra commits. next steps in this repo:

[x] simplify regex so that the Linguist grammar compiler runs with no errors
[ ] update highlighting in vscode extension to accommodate regex simplification
[x] add regression tests for highlighting

next steps for Linguist:

[x] resolve ruby issue with adding grammar to Linguist (discussion question)
[ ] find appropriate samples of LF usage for Linguist
[ ] create PR for adding LF to Linguist
