iPad won't appear in the Finder sidebar #154

I clicked the eject ⏏ button next to my iPad in Finder while connected to it over Wi-Fi, because it was not successfully completing backups. I immediately plugged it in using a reliable USB-C to USB-C cable, expecting to see it in the sidebar again so that I could attempt a backup again. It was ignored. There was no trust prompt on either the iPad or the Mac.

However, the device is simply not showing up in the sidebar anymore. I've tried toggling Wi-Fi on the iPad and using multiple cables.

However, the iPad is still connected using Universal Control. So the device is still on the network, and macOS can connect to it in some way.

The following help articles are useless:

I'm going to try to rebooting the iPad, and then my computer.

If that doesn't work, I can try connecting via Xcode, but that's supposed to be unnecessary.

Xcode says the device is locked:

This is a lie. The device is connected and unlocked. So there must be some sort of bug.

Maybe there's a bug when you connect a device that's already unlocked, that somehow persists when connected by cable again.

Rebooting the iPad did not help.

Restarting the computer finally worked!

The iPad is visible in the sidebar again, over Wi-Fi. It seems a tad slower to connect, but it does work eventually!

This has been an issue again, for the past month or two. With a brand-new iPad Pro. I can't get it to connect over cable or anything else, much less stay connected over WiFi.

I've tried resetting device trust permissions, but that also didn't work.

I went to Apple and they replaced the iPad Pro with the same model. I'm now able to connect over a cable, but "Show this iPad when connected over Wi-Fi" is not working.

It worked initially after connecting via cable, but it quickly got to the point where it the iPad would disappear from the sidebar as soon as unplugged — regardless of the "Show this iPad when connected over Wi-Fi" setting.

Aha!

It looks like the Wi-Fi auto-join settings for the new iPad did not get set up the same way as the previous. I've fixed this and now the iPad is showing up in the sidebar just as easily as my iPhone.

This doesn't explain all the issues with the old iPad, but I hope it means I don't debug this again.
