I have a top-of-the-line M1 Max, and my FPS are always struggling in a freighter — nowhere near 60FPS in some locations/directions. (To be fair, I'm playing in 5K, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for pretty much anywhere else in the game.)
It's clear that the freighter is meant to be a place you can build a lot — there is space for over a dozen floors with hundreds of rooms on each floor. And the game also unloads rooms that you're not looking at.
But even with 10-20 rooms I was getting lag, and even by keeping my rooms limited to rooms that I use all the time it's still constantly laggy. By contrast, my main base has significantly more constructed items (and the surrounding terrain) and rarely feels like the performance goes below 60FPS.
It's far from unplayable, but definitely takes the joy out of building a snazzy and functional base in my freighter.
