Minor language changes & gitignore #4

Gemfile.lock should be in source control. In bundler projects, it contains a frozen list of dependencies and their versions so that other contributors will be using the same versions of all the gems as the main project. It eliminates entire classes of bugs. We should run bundle update periodically to keep it current and keep it in git.

I also made a few minor tweaks to the language in a couple of places to be more clear and inclusive.

I'm taking your word on the Gemfile.lock as I don't know anything about it. Took the other changes.
