My last email with donate@wikimedia.org has been left without answer.

I also proposed to Homebrew to use Liberapay for funding and they said a big no: https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/pull/4968

The problem is sometimes people misunderstand me šŸ˜¢

Reading at it, that isn't a big no:

We may consider this in future but not at present, sorry.

Thinking further, my opinion is that with only Paypal/Stripe support in liberapay, it's not the right time for asking the biggies to use LP. I think we might be better to wait to have a proper replacement for mangopay for that. My 2 cents.

@MartinDelille, you just have to see it from their perspective: running a project, responding to X new issues a day, and one comes in that looks like a sales pitch. They're going to triage the issue unless they see a bunch of pledges lined up and users not affiliated with Liberapay asking them for it.

It's not bad to get Liberapay into their issue queue, but cold-calling isn't necessarily the best way to get them to sign up.

I don't see major problems. The English isn't exactly as I would have written it, but is understandable. Some minor suggestions are below.

For this part:

Letā€™s take an example: Alice wants to donate $1 per week to Bob, and she decides to send $12 for her first payment. In the old system the money would have gone into her Mangopay wallet, then every Wednesday $1 would have been transferred from that wallet to Bobā€™s wallet, until there wasnā€™t any money left in Aliceā€™s wallet. In the new system the $12 go directly to the Stripe or PayPal account of Bob, and every week Liberapay subtracts $1 from the amount that Alice has paid in advance, until that number reaches zero. In both systems Alice receives an email notification after 12 weeks reminding her that itā€™s time to pay again.

It would be nice to include a sentence about the notifications that Bob receives every week. Something like

In both systems Bob receives an email notification every week with the amount he received, but in the old system his wallet would receive money each week, while in the new system the notification shows the donation(s) he has already received via Stripe or PayPal.

There is also no mention of teams. In light of comments at https://github.com/liberapay/liberapay.com/issues/1222, maybe a short paragraph at the end of "How Liberapay Works Now" describing that teams are (barely) working but still in progress might be worth it.

Wouldn't it be good to write in some way that with paypal/stripe now, when a payment has been done, you can't change it anymore? (hence the users need to be a bit more cautious about what they're doing than with the previous mangopay system)

@trebmuh Donations can be modified, there just isn't any builtin refund system yet to deal with cancelled donations.

Which mean from a basic user point of view that they cannot change their donation easily. @Changaco I keep strongly suggesting to write something about this subject since I've seen a bunch of messages on Mastodon from people talking about this issue.

Whether or not it's implemented is not that important, the important thing is to talk about it since people have questions on this topic.

Liberapay was down for 7 hours during the night. Looks like an asshole flooding the server with requests managed to make it stop responding completely (by maxing out the RAM?). sudo /usr/local/bin/supervisorctl -c /opt/python/etc/supervisord.conf restart httpd fixed it.

Could you elaborate on why? I was under the impression that Liberapay is functional again since PP, Stripe, SEPA are working.

Liberapay is "barely working", not "back on track". PayPal still breaks anonymity, we're missing an anti-fraud system for SEPA direct debits, Liberapay is out of sync with Stripe because refunds aren't implemented on our side, several things are still confusingā€¦

The OP retoot a 2 months old blog post which is starting to be outdated by now (regarding the SEPA status for example). I then made him aware that progress have been done since then in saying that "LP is back on track".

As an example, the "back on track" expression is described here as:

continuing as planned or expected, typically after a problem or distraction

or

running according to schedule again.

or

going in the right direction again after a mistake, failure, etc

which fits perfectly fine with the work being done since this medium post. "back on track" doesn't mean "is working perfectly" but more something like "is in the right direction".

While I understand that there are still a lot of things to be done to get LP perfect, I still think that this communication was fine.
