Investigate common JATS variants for MVP

Problem / Motivation

There are various ways of capturing the same information in JATS. We need to have an opinion on which variant(s) will be supported for MVP, and which ones we are sympathetic to adding in the future.

Tasks

• [ ] Investigate variant ways of capturing common information/content.
• [ ] Provide a list of these variants (from which further tickets can be raised)

To be done in separate tickets after this - Determine an opinion on which variant (or whether all variants) should be supported for MVP, for each common set of data.

• References

  • Mixed-citation vs element-citation

• Maths

  • MathML (Hindawi, eLife, IJM), LaTex (eLife to use in future, ~50% of PMC articles) or graphic (bioRxiv), or more than one of these using <alternatives>

• Authors

  • contrib[@contrib-type=”author”] is consistently used across publishers
  • name vs string-name - will have to support both?
  • Use of <role> (ijm.00074)
  • Use of bio (only eLife)
  • Use of on-behalf-of (only eLife)
  • Group authors (only eLife), presumably not MVP

• Author affiliation linking

  • aff as child of contrib (very few do this it seems)
  • xref[@ref-type=”aff”] child ofcontrib linking to aff inside same contrib-group (eLife, IJM, bioRxiv)
  • xref[@ref-type=”aff”] child of contrib linking to aff outside same contrib-group (Hindawi)

• Content of affiliations 3 variants:

  1. Formatting intended to be added by template (IJM, Hindawi, eLife)
  2. Formatting included in capture (bioRxiv)
  3. Various different elements (e.g. sup vs label)

• Non-author contributors

  • Hindawi have Academic Editor, and Guest Editor
  • eLife has reviewers
  • SciELO, Erudit have translators
  • bioRxiv, and IJM have no non-author contributors

• Fig-group

  • eLife use-case (not common)
  • Hindawi use-case - multiple parts of one figure
  • IJM, bioRxiv (what we’ve seen so far) - no use of it

• Urls
  • ext-link and uri can be used. ext-link appears to be more common, but we also need to account for uri which is allowed in all JATS colours.
